CA articleship and industrial training interviews

Who it's for: CA Inter students joining articleship, and articled assistants moving to industrial training

Firms and companies check three things: whether you know the basics you studied, whether you'll stay and work through busy season, and whether you can talk to a client. Expect a technical round with a partner or manager and a short HR conversation.

The answers are patterns to adapt with your own facts, not scripts to learn by heart: interviewers can tell.

  1. 1

    Tell me about yourself.

What they're checking: Can you give a clear, relevant two-minute picture, not your whole life story?

How to answer: Present, past, future: where you are in CA now (groups cleared, attempts), what you've done that's relevant (any audit or tax exposure, Excel, Tally), and why this firm.

    A strong answer

"I've cleared both groups of CA Inter, Group 1 in my first attempt. During my B.Com I helped a family friend's firm with GST returns for six months, which is how I got interested in indirect tax. I'm looking for articleship where I'll get real audit and tax exposure, and your firm's mix of statutory audit and GST work is exactly that."

  2. 2

Why do you want to join our firm?

What they're checking: Did you research them, and will you stay the full term?

How to answer: Name two specifics: their kind of clients or work, the size of the team, a partner's area. Tie it to what you want to learn. Never say 'stipend' or 'near my home' first.

    A strong answer

"You audit manufacturing companies and also handle their GST, so I'd see both sides of the same client. A mid-size team also means I'd handle files myself rather than only tick and bash."

  3. 3

What is the difference between an audit and an investigation?

What they're checking: Core audit concepts from your Inter syllabus.

How to answer: Define each in a line, then contrast purpose, scope and who appoints.

    A strong answer

"An audit examines financial statements to express an opinion on whether they show a true and fair view; it's usually annual and statutory. An investigation looks into a specific matter, like a suspected fraud, has a narrow scope, and is done when someone has a reason to suspect something."

  4. 4

How would you vouch a purchase entry?

What they're checking: Whether you can actually do the work on day one.
